DirectTV Scholsrship Entry

Technology us used in several ways to explore the world. Just recently I used Priceline.com to help book a flight so I can explore the world and move to college. It took me a while but I was able to buy the ticket online and communicate all over the states with soon to be peers over Facebook.com.

People think of exploring the world via internet as looking as Google Maps, or just gaining knowledge about a place on a tourist’s website, but I view it as using the internet as a helper not a crutch. I want to see the world in person not on a computer screen. I will admit to using the internet to look at pictured of places I want to one day visit and use it to find out where something is but I also use it to just purchase items such as a plane ticket.

Another way I have used technology to view the world, well more like downtown, was with Maps. A few friends and I were driving around downtown at night after being in the house all day and we knew we wanted pizza, but were not sure where a pizza place was nor if they were still open. We wound up at a place called the Wedge, and loved it. Later that night we were driving around and found a concert going on. We had no idea who this signer was but we parked down the road and walked back to see the end. We then went onto Google, and searched the lyrics from the song; we found out that the singer was none other than Luke Wade and No Civilians. That night we used technology to look up a few of his songs and then were able to talk to him for a few minutes.

Technology helps out a lot when I have been lost, or just want to see what is around me. I use it to communicate with the admissions office at school, or for phone interviews. It helps me get a sense that there is more than just my small town life. It helps me meet people whom I would probably have never met before.

I have Osteogenesis Imperfecta, and on Wednesday night the OI foundation has a chat room online, I am able to log on anytime that night and talk to people all over the world with OI, or with children with it. I love talking to these people and getting new perspectives on how they live with what they have.

I love being able to talk to people all over the world and hear their stories and without technology I would be able to get a better perspective of the world around me. Every day is another day closer to the day I will travel to some of my favorite places, and every day I go online to learn more and more about these places.

There are many more tales of me using technology to understand the world more, but in the end almost everyone uses it and it helps keep us connected in a new and ever changing world.
